So why is it important to study history? After all, it’s about things that have already taken place. Isn’t it just the study of dry dates and facts, ancient battles and dead heroes? That is far from the truth. History is the story of the heroes and battles that shaped our cultures and societies and the world that we live in today. 

You can thank the Greeks for some of our architectural structures, like the use of columns or pediments. Or even the principles of government that govern our society: principles like trial by jury or the separation of religion and government. 

 Did you know we can sometimes understand what may happen in the future by looking at what has happened in the past? History has a way of repeating itself. When we understand the poor choices people made in the past and the consequences that followed, we can learn to avoid those same mistakes today. Patrick Henry once said, “I know of no way of judging the future but by the past.” In other words, the best way to guess what people might do next is to look at what they have done before.

Lastly, understanding the past gives us a sense of national identity, a sense of belonging in our country learning where our nation came from and about the people who helped shape it from the very beginning. Can you imagine growing up in a home and not knowing who your parents were or whether you had any brothers or sisters? You would want to understand your past and where you came from. In the same way, by studying the history of our country, we learn about the beginning of our nation and where we, as a people, came from.
