You just finished reading through your first issue of the Revolution Minute. Now what? How do you fill in the time while you're anticipating the arrival of your next letter from The Time Traveler’s Tribune?
Now it’s your turn to put together your own personalized piece of history. You are going to junk journal. But wait a minute, you say. What even is Junk journaling?
Your junk journal is that special place where you keep your favorite pieces from your history packet. It’s also where you conduct your own historical research and keep record of all of your amazing historical writings. Junk journaling is just a fancy way of mixing your creative writing with your scrapbooking to create a personalized journal.
Here are some fun things you can do with your junk journal.
1. Write a title at the top of your page
You can title your page The Revolution Minute or use a creative title that you came up with yourself. Make sure and write the date at the top of your page.
2. Save the postage stamp
Every envelope from The Time Traveler’s Tribune is postmarked with a historical stamp. Cut it out and save it into your junk journal. Write beside it which issue you are on.
3. Collect the stickers
In your envelope, you will find a special pad of stickers. Place them into your journal. Write fun facts underneath your stickers. For George Washington you could write something like: Leader of the Continental Army & first president of the United States.
4. Save your favorite pieces
Glue your favorite pieces from your historical letter into your junk journal. You can use your timeline cards as well as cut outs from your Patriot Press newspaper.
Write your Militia Mission into your journal copying your writing assignments and your map challenge onto the pages.
5. Make it your own
Become a historian. Ask questions, find answers and record your research in your journal. Do you have favorite fun facts or quotes from the American Revolution that you would like to keep in your journal?
Write your own adventure. Keep a historical journal, write a speech like one that the Founding Fathers might have given to the Continental Congress, or write a letter to a friend. Maybe you're a part of Washington’s Culper Spy Ring, or a soldier in the Continental Army. Do you have a friend that is a loyalist? What would you write them in a letter? As a Daughter of Liberty, what would you say in a newspaper column?
